What it does

The bill would require the Government Accountability Office to study the 2025 financial crisis in Argentina. The study would cover the crisis's origins, what the US government and IMF knew and advised beforehand, the US and international response, the Treasury Secretary's legal authority to use the Exchange Stabilization Fund, and Argentina's recovery efforts. Within 18 months of enactment, the Comptroller General would report the findings to two congressional committees and then post the report publicly online.

2GAO report

This section would require the Comptroller General of the United States (the head of the Government Accountability Office) to study the 2025 financial crisis in Argentina. The study would have to cover five things: the origins of Argentina's financial crisis; how aware the United States government and the International Monetary Fund were of Argentina's financial problems and what advice they gave Argentina; the United States and international response to the crisis, including the terms and conditions of the agreements that carried out United States assistance; the legal authority the Secretary of the Treasury has to use the Exchange Stabilization Fund to pay for United States assistance; and Argentina's efforts to recover from the crisis. Within 18 months after the Act becomes law, the Comptroller General would have to send a report with the study's findings and conclusions to the House Committee on Financial Services and the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs. After submitting that report, the Comptroller General would have to make it publicly available on the Government Accountability Office's website.
