S2706 2026 -- S 2706 ======== LC003275 ======== STATE OF RHODE ISLAND IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2026 ____________ A N A C T IN AMENDMENT OF AN ACT PASSED AT THE JANUARY SESSION A.D. 1942 ENTITLED AN ACT TO INCORPORATE THE WESTERN COVENTRY FIRE DISTRICT Introduced By: Senators Rogers, and Raptakis Date Introduced: February 27, 2026 Referred To: Senate Housing & Municipal Government It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: 1 SECTION 1. An Act Passed at the January Session A.D. 1942 entitled “An Act to 2 Incorporate the Western Coventry Fire District”, as from time to time amended, is hereby further 3 amended to read as follows: 4 Section 13. Vote to approve district merger, consolidation, or transition to municipal fire 5 department or consolidated fire district. 6 (a) Notwithstanding any other law, the District shall not be merged, joined, consolidated, 7 transitioned, or otherwise made a part of a municipal fire department of the Town of Coventry, or 8 consolidated with any other fire district without an all-day referendum and the affirmative vote of 9 the electors of the District in support thereof, said vote to be supervised by the Board of Directors. 10 (b) The all-day referendum shall be called in the same manner as Special Meetings of the 11 District as set forth in Section 6 hereof. 12 SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage. ======== LC003275 ======== EXPLANATION BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF A N A C T IN AMENDMENT OF AN ACT PASSED AT THE JANUARY SESSION A.D. 1942 ENTITLED AN ACT TO INCORPORATE THE WESTERN COVENTRY FIRE DISTRICT *** 1 This act would amend the public law incorporating the Western Coventry Fire District to 2 require a referendum and affirmative vote of the fire district electors prior to any merge or 3 consolidation of the district with any other district or with the fire department of the town of 4 Coventry. 5 This act would take effect upon passage. ======== LC003275 ======== LC003275 - Page 2 of 2
