Brien, Marszalkowski, Craven, Caldwell, and Hopkins Date Introduced: May 05, 2026 Referred To: House read and passed 1 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers Week was first proclaimed on May 5, 1984, 2 by President Ronald Reagan when he signed Proclamation 5187 creating National Correctional 3 Officers Week to recognize the men and women who work in jails, prisons, and community 4 corrections across the country; and 5 WHEREAS, In 1996, The United States Congress officially changed this designation to 6 National Correctional Officers and Employees Week ; and 7 WHEREAS, The week of May 3 through May 9, 2026 has been designated as National 8 Correctional Officers and Employees Week by the United States Department of Justice and the 9 Federal Bureau of Prisons; and 10 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week honors the work of 11 correctional employees and correctional personnel for their service with honor, respect and 12 integrity; and 13 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week raises awareness of the 14 duties, hazards, and sacrifices made by correctional officers and employees; and 15 WHEREAS, National Correctional Officers and Employees Week in Rhode Island 16 recognizes the employees of the Rhode Island Department of Corrections and the members of the 17 Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers for their role in safeguarding the citizens of 18 the State by providing safe, secure, and humane incarceration of offenders within their custody; 19 now, therefore be it 1 RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby 2 celebrates May 3 through May 9, 2026, as National Correctional Officers and Employees Week 3 in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further 4 RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to 5 transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Wayne T.
