H7685 2026 -- H 7685 ======== LC005029 ======== STATE OF RHODE ISLAND IN GENERAL ASSEMBLY JANUARY SESSION, A.D. 2026 ____________ A N A C T RELATING TO PUBLIC OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES -- RETIREMENT SYSTEM -- CONTRIBUTIONS AND BENEFITS Introduced By: Representatives O Brien, Dawson, Shanley, Corvese, Azzinaro, Kennedy, McEntee, Noret, Bennett, and Phillips Date Introduced: February 11, 2026 Referred To: House Finance It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows: 1 SECTION 1. Section 36-10-9.8 of the General Laws in Chapter 36-10 entitled Retirement 2 System — Contributions and Benefits is hereby amended to read as follows: 3 36-10-9.8. Retirement on service allowance — State law enforcement professionals. 4 (a) Effective January 1, 2025 2027 , notwithstanding any special law or general law, rule, 5 or regulation to the contrary, state employees employed as deputy sheriffs, capitol police officers, 6 environmental police officers, juvenile program workers, shift coordinators, probation and parole 7 officers, firefighters, crew chiefs, assistant chiefs, fire investigators, fire safety inspectors, fire 8 safety training officers, explosives and flammable liquids technicians, and campus police officers 9 employed by the state of Rhode Island shall be entitled to the benefits provided by §§ 45-21.2-5, 10 45-21.2-6, 45-21.2-10, 45-21.2-11, 45-21.2-12, and 45-21.2-13. 11 (b) For members identified in subsection (a) of this section, service credits earned prior to 12 January 1, 2025, shall be determined by the laws in effect on December 31, 2024. 13 SECTION 2. This act shall take effect on January 1, 2027. ======== LC005029 ======== EXPLANATION BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL OF A N A C T RELATING TO PUBLIC OFFICERS AND EMPLOYEES -- RETIREMENT SYSTEM -- CONTRIBUTIONS AND BENEFITS *** 1 This act would add probation and parole officers to the list of state law enforcement 2 professionals, for purpose of retirement on service allowance. 3 This act would take effect on January 1, 2027. ======== LC005029 ======== LC005029 - Page 2 of 2
