7 AS INTRODUCED
8 An Act relating to the Department of Corrections;
amending 57 O.S. 2021, Section 506, which relates to
9 Oklahoma Corrections Act of 1967; modifying
qualifications of the Director of the Department of
10 Corrections; providing term of service; deleting
removal or replacement power of the Governor;
11 modifying certain voting requirement; and providing
an effective date.

15 BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA:
16 SECTION 1. AMENDATORY 57 O.S. 2021, Section 506, is
17 amended to read as follows:
18 Section 506. There is hereby created the position of Director
19 of the Department of Corrections. The Director shall be qualified
20 for such position by character, knowledge, skill, ability,
21 education, training and successful administrative experience, shall
22 be certified as a peace officer in this state by the Council on Law
23 Enforcement Education and Training, and shall have five (5) years of
24 professional level work. The Director of Corrections shall be

1 appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate
2 and shall serve at the pleasure of the Governor and may be removed
3 or replaced without cause for a term of five (5) years.
4 Compensation for the Director shall be determined by the Governor.
5 The Director may be removed from office by a two-thirds (2/3) vote
6 of the members elected to and constituting each chamber of the
7 Legislature.
8 SECTION 2. This act shall become effective November 1, 2026.
