6                            AS INTRODUCED

7   An Act relating to the True Grit Trail; directing the

    Oklahoma Department of Transportation to erect

8   signage in certain locations; requiring the Oklahoma

    Department of Transportation to collaborate with the

9   Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department to

    maintain certain online resources for the True Grit

10  Trail; providing source of funding; providing for

    codification; and providing an effective date.

14 BE IT ENACTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA:

15  SECTION 1.      NEW LAW  A new section of law to be codified

16 in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 4101 of Title 69, unless there

17 is created a duplication in numbering, reads as follows:

18  The Oklahoma Department of Transportation shall erect signage

19 designating the following roads as the True Grit Trail:

20  Beginning at the start, US Highway 64 at the Oklahoma state line

21 with Arkansas to US Highway 59. From US Highway 59 to US Highway

22 271. From US Highway 271 to the town of Spiro, Oklahoma. From

23 Spiro Oklahoma back to US 59. From US Highway 59 to Oklahoma

24 Highway 31. From Oklahoma Highway 31 to US Highway 270. From US

1 Highway 270 to Mains Street in McAlester. From Main Street to East

2 Krebs Avenue. From East Krebs Avenue and Main Street back to US

3 Highway 27O. From US Highway 270 to Oklahoma Highway 2. From

4 Oklahoma Highway 2 to Robbers Cave State Park. From Robbers Cave

5 State Park on Oklahoma Highway 2 to US Highway 270. From US Highway

6 270 to Oklahoma Highway 82. From Oklahoma Highway 82 to US Highway

7 27A. From US Highway 271 to Oklahoma Highway 1. From Oklahoma

8 Highway 1 and ending at the intersection of Oklahoma Highway 1 and

9 US Highway 259.

10  B. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation shall erect

11 informational highway signage designed or approved by the Oklahoma

12 Tourism and Recreation Department to direct visitors to sites of

13 significant interest along the True Grit Trail, including:

14  1. The City of Sallisaw;

15  2. The Town of Spiro;

16  3. The Town of Bokoshe;

17  4. The Town of McCurtain;

18  5. The Town of Kinta;

19  6. The Town of Quinton;

20  7. The City of Krebs;

21  8. The City of McAlester;

22  9. The City of Hartshorne;

23  10. The City of Wilburton;

24  11. Robbers Cave State Park;

1      12. The Town of Red Oak;

2      13. The Town of Bengal;

3      14. The Town of Talihina; and

4      15. The Talimena National Scenic Byway.

5      C. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation shall collaborate

6 with the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department to maintain

7 online resources for the True Grit Trail, including but not limited

8 to:

9      1. A map of the True Grit Trail;

10     2. Information about each of the sites of significant interest

11 identified in this section; and

12     3. Historical context regarding the True Grit Trail.

13     D. The cost associated with signage required by this act may be

14 provided from private sources and may include the costs of the

15 initial erection of signs as well as the cost of potential

16 replacement or reconstruction of signs. Upon receiving adequate

17 funding, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation shall cause

18 suitable permanent markers to be placed as required by this act.

19     SECTION 2. This act shall become effective November 1, 2025.
