Relates to the reinstatement of state recognition and acknowledgement of the Montaukett Indian Nation

Provides for the reinstatement of state recognition and acknowledgement of the Montaukett Indian Nation; provides that the Montaukett Indian nation shall have a chief or sachem, three tribal trustees and a tribal secretary; provides for the qualification of voters; makes related provisions.

VETO MESSAGE - No. 129 TO THE ASSEMBLY: I am returning herewith, without my approval, the following bill: Assembly Bill Number 5295, entitled: "AN ACT to amend the Indian law, in relation to the reinstatement of state recognition and acknowledgement of the Montaukett Indian Nation" NOT APPROVED This bill would provide for reinstatement and acknowledgement of the Montaukett as an Indian Nation under state law. In the early 1900s, New York courts held that the historic Montaukett community in New York no longer functioned as a governmental unit in the State. The Montaukett community has sought recognition both through legislation--this is the seventh time the Legislature has passed a bill of this kind--and a State administrative process, which is available to any Native American communities seeking state recognition.
