Section 279.10, subsection 2, unnumbered 1 paragraph 1, Code 2025, is amended to read as follows: 2 The board of directors of a school district and the 3 authorities in charge of an accredited nonpublic school may 4 apply to the department of education for authorization to 5 maintain a year-round school calendar at an attendance center 6 or school for students in prekindergarten through grade 7 eight twelve . However, a board shall hold a public hearing 8 on any proposal relating to authorization for a year-round 9 school calendar prior to submitting an application under this 10 subsection to the department of education for approval. 11 EXPLANATION 12 The inclusion of this explanation does not constitute agreement with 13 the explanation’s substance by the members of the general assembly. 14 This bill authorizes school districts and accredited 15 nonpublic schools to apply to the department of education for 16 authorization to maintain a year-round school calendar at an 17 attendance center or school for students enrolled in grades 9 18 through 12. Current law allows school districts and accredited 19 nonpublic schools to apply to maintain a year-round calendar 20 at an attendance center or school for students enrolled in 21 prekindergarten through grade eight. Initial applications 22 for a year-round school calendar must be submitted to the 23 department of education not later than November 1 of the 24 preceding school year. 25 -1- LSB 2307HV (1) 91 jda/jh 1/ 1
